I've never been the easiest guy to buy presents for. I don't really have any collections, my interests are a little eccentric, I'm not one that gets into the latest "gadgets" and I already own enough ties. Every Christmas my wife would kindly try to draw out of me what I would put on a Christmas list and every year I'd only come up with a few suggestions--some of which (such as socks) didn't exactly make the gift giver feel like Santa.
This year further complicated this dilemma for my family. My already small list had been reduced even further by my illness. At present time, I've lost the ability to do so many of the things I've loved to do (run, fish, bike, play tennis, eat … just to name a few). My hobby list is at an all-time low. Hence, I don't have as many things that I use or want right now.
Yet, my family, loving people that they are, wanted to give me gifts anyway. So, I began suggesting that they give me what I came to call "gifts of faith"--gifts I can't use right now, but Lord willing, I will in months to come. I received a few fishing lures for the day when I can handle a rod and reel again. Most notably, I received gift cards for some eating establishments I miss--Red Lobster, Jamba Juice, Coldstone, Baja Fresh. Right now these gifts are just pieces of plastic sitting in my drawer, but I trust that the day will come when they become pleasant outings, delightful tastes and fine memories. They were given to me and received by me in faith that the day will come when I will swallow and eat and enjoy this aspect of life once again. I have no human evidence of any improvement in my swallow, but I continue to look forward to the day when this part of life is restored to me.
I will confess that I looked to see if the cards had an expiration period on them--I have hope, but no assurance, that I'll be swallowing in the next year. "Would their gift be wasted?" I wondered. My humanness reveals itself on a steady basis.
I tell you this today because I like the spirit behind these gifts. "We believe that you'll eat normally again, Dad. You're going to swallow again, Honey." This is what I heard with each card. This itself was a gift…the gift of faith.
Sometimes we can believe for ourselves. Sometimes it helps to have others believe for us. Our faith can waver. Our "faith meter" can look like a Minnesota thermometer in January. Then someone comes along who has the faith to believe for us and the warming breeze begins to thaw our hearts.
If you don't have the faith to see your way through your current crises, hang around people who do. Some of these people can be found in books--read the biography of a saint such as Hudson Taylor or countless others who have walked the road before us.
Others of you are in a place where you can come alongside and believe for someone else who is faltering in faith right now. Don't be shy in expressing your God-confidence when theirs is wearing thing. Don't be obnoxious about it, but buoy them up with your belief that God is in this and He is good. This is a significant ministry. Don't underestimate it.
The gift cards sit in my drawer, but when I see them they are a statement to me: someone believes that a better day is coming. Maybe I can keep believing for another day as well.
Believing with you that God's goodness will be revealed in your trial,
John
PS I have the privilege of preaching at Salem Alliance this weekend. I'm a bit apprehensive. I haven't felt as strong the last few days and the message isn't coming together as I would desire in my head and heart. If you think of praying for me for this weekend, I would appreciate it. Thanks for being people I can turn to for prayer.

just what I needed at this time.
I am dealing with something that right now seems so impossible, unreachable, and unattainable.
It's easy, at times, to feel bitterness, frustration, and anger instead of peace, hope, and faith.
Love you,
Val
Today as Val goes about her many responsibilities, may she have a deep sense of your love and care for her. Please fill her heart with your hope and your peace. We know that you can do the impossible. We love you and ask that you encourage Val's heart this day and in the days ahead. In your name we ask. Amen. Delores
God bless you John you can do with Gods help .
May God come along side you John, for strength, comfort, and the right words to speak. May your words be God's words for us. Pray with expectation that God will grant you the ability to share in all five weekend services.
Be Blessed!
Dale
My prayer every week and especially during the weekend for whomever has the responsibility to bring us the message is that he/she would have physical, emotional and spiritual strength to pull it off. And that includes all the preparation from trying to find just the right applications -- and there are many from these rich lessons we're studying -- to finding the right illustrations to help us remember. God hasn't failed us yet; so I'm confident you and God will come through again.
With many prayers,
I just knew this weekend was going to be awesome. My family and I will be there at 5:00 Saturday evening excited to hear your voice and with full confidence that God will provide just the right words and message for you to share. As Gail mentions above, God has not failed us yet...

I am FAITH BELIEVING WITH YOUR FAMILY
YOU WILL SWALLOW AGAIN> sometimes things happen when you least expect it! You will be AMAZED.
I know the Lord will inspire you and help you where ever you need the Lord's intervention for you to speak at Salem Alliance.
I am rereading and soaking in and studying a book I have read before called INTERCESSORY PRAYER by DUTCH SHEETS. TAKEN FROM CHAPTER 12 THE SUBSTANCE OF PRAYER
A POEM:
Two frogs fell into a can of cream,
or so it has been told.
The sides of the can were shiny and steep,
the cream was deep and cold.
"oh, what's the use," said number one.
"It's plain no help's around.
"Good -bye, my friend, good-bye, sad world"
and weeping still he drowned.
But number two, of sterner stuff,
dog paddled in surprise.
The while he licked his creamy lips
and blinked his creamy eyes.
"I'll swim at least a while," he thought,
or so it has been said.
It really wouldn't help the world
if one more frog were dead.
And hour or more he kicked and swam,
not once he stopped to mutter.
Then hopped out from the island he had
made of fresh churned butter.

This little poem teaches us on Prayer > The importance of PERSEVERANCE AND ENDURANCE.
YOU WILL EAT AGAIN.

I am calling out to Jesus in your behalf like the blind man who called out to Jesus from the crowd & called out even louder when some in the crowd told him to quiet down.
P.S What did you mean about the "Minnesota thermometer in January". *just kidding......
I am praying for you for tomorrow, that what God has for you to say will be strong, first in your own heart, and then to those who listen.
Praying also that none of the plastic cards will reach their expiration before you have used every one of them!
Blessings and prayers,
Sonja
"Taste and see that the Lord is GOOD", "His words were found and I did eat them". While it may seem odd, WE should pray the word over you concerning eating/swallowing.
II Chronciles 17:20.
Please check that out.
And John, I am looking forward to hearing you tommorow. Just seeing you up there is sataisfying. That is not to say that we are neglected when you are not up there. We at SAC are so very fortunate to have many good "Messengers" to teach us.
Further, our Bible studies are so relevant for the days we are now experienceing.
Thanks to all of our staff.
Love, Vera

I feel it important that we pray in an appropriate manner. Our Father does hear and ALL our requests. But, IF we know that it's the Father's will for John to swallow again, then it makes it easy for all of us to pray effectively. Why wouldn't it be God's will? If the Father has brought John thus far, and I recall the days when it was doubtful whether he would walk again, why would He stop short of full restoration (in His time)? Ah, here's a great one: "I thank you Father that Pastor John EATS THE GOOD OF THE LAND".
Perhaps I'm just "crazy in Minnesota", too much time out in the cold, battered by the Vikes loss, or whatever, but brothers and sisters please recall the time when it seemed beyond hope for John Stumbo to be back in the pulpit!
Remember that the word says, "the gifts and callings of God are without repentance". Father, I thank you now that your strength and the Stumbo annointing rests upon John this weekend as he ministers your Word.
The "effecutal/effective (does that mean some prayer can be ineffective?) fervent (not a one time deal, not a quick blab and grab, but a stay with it until John has what the Word promises) prayer of a righteous (by the grace and blood we have been made righteous and thus able to bring John before the throne of grace) man/women, acomplishes MUCH!"
Here's my prayer: "Father, I thank you today that John lives in your peace and stands in your grace. I thank you Father for being the strength of his life. I thank you that he eats the good of the land and therefore is able to eat, drink, and swallow normally and is able to use all those gift cards, for your glory".
God's word does not return to him without accomplishing something. So, I ask you to join me in speaking this over him in unity. If you are a doubter, I double dog dare you to try it, out loud, for two weeks and see how you feel about it then.
Remember, HE is faithful to begin AND finish what HE has already started.
Thanks Everyone!
Gifts of faith. As someone with Faith as one of my spiritual gifts, I like this one. Bruce and I watched "The Book of Eli" today. Great movie, btw. In one of the scenes he's trying to describe faith to a girl. It got me to thinking though. If you have it, it's difficult to describe it to someone, particularly if they don't.
I certainly do have faith that you will do many things again. I also have faith that all of the last year plus has been a journey of learning for so many more than you. Thanks to you for that. You could have hidden all that you've learned or decided to be stubborn and not learn what God had planned for you, but you didn't/don't. You have such wonderful insight and your honesty and transparency through the times when you questioned or struggled have been even more heroic to me.
Thanks for the umpteenth time for being you. I'm glad you asked for gifts of faith.

PS, I didn't get to hear your sermon, we were watching Tyler run in Idaho. I will get the tape, I have faith you did awesome
Our 6 year old daughter shook your hand and as she turned away she asked me "Why does his voice sound that way?" It was wonderful to tell her the '6-year old version' of your story. That night at our nightly prayer time she simply prayed, "God help Mr. John's voice get stronger." I love the prayers of our children. The simple words and complete faith that those words will reach God's ears with answers to return.
We will continue to lift you in prayer!

God-cidences!
I was reminded recently of God-cidences!
This is not a term found in Webster’s,
Nor is it a term voiced commonly by people,
But it nevertheless is truly accurate.
It means everything happens by God’s sovereignty.
That’s a lot to grasp – beyond our understanding.
In saying this we refer to His almighty power,
And we are thinking of His absolute wisdom.
To so speak of God is worthy of His person;
He alone deserves such praise.
In ALL He does He’s perfectly in control,
And we can rest in Him totally at peace.
Storms may come our way, and they often do.
Winds may blow like twisting tornadoes.
The way may get dark as we go forward,
But in God, our Father, wonders happen.
He calms the seas that thrash around us;
He commands the winds to be still, and cease’
He lightens our path so we see Him clearly,
As He sends miracles to bless us.
What a wonderful thing to experience God so –
To know he has led us, answering our prayers.
All doubts vanish and fears subside
As God brings to pass His purposes.
In our journey through this sin-cursed world,
Where so many people disregard our God,
It’s good to see Him moving powerfully
To encourage us, counsel us and protect us.
Oh Lord God, I pray before Your throne,
When Satan would disrupt Your plan in my life,
Come, reveal Yourself in incomparable glory,
And let me see daily those God-cidences.
Nothing else’ll ever satisfy my soul.
Nothing else’ll meet my deepest need.
Only You can do great, wondrous acts –
Displaying Your power and wisdom before me.
Amen and Amen - rdo
