Today's intake was some orange juice, a half biscuit with gravy, a banana (4 hours to get the banana down), a chocolate shake (3 hours for the shake--but a delicious 3 hours), a half dozen bites of Joanna's enchiladas, a couple Pringles, 1/6 of a donut, and water. To close the night I tried some ice cream, but by then my swallower was so tired I called it a day. A highlight of the day was to stop at a public drinking fountain to take a sip for the first time in almost 18 months…ah, the small pleasures of life.
All this was good and encouraging, but by 6:00pm I started to get concerned. Even though I had a beverage or food item in my hand almost the entire day, I wasn't going to be able to get the calories and hydration needed to sustain myself. Swallowing requires dozens of muscles and nerves to cooperate, and after 18 months of dormancy these little guys were definitely starting to feel the effects of the sudden two day workout.
I decided to make one last effort with my feeding tube before going to the Emergency Room. I asked my nephew--a man of many talents--if he had the right tool needed. He assured me he did. The operation was quick and successful. No, I didn't remove my feeding tube from my own stomach…I simply removed a portion of my feeding tube. I know that some of you are automatically worried by this kind of independent action, but hey, if something had gone wrong a little duct tape would have been all I would have needed to patch myself up until I made it to the ER.
I'm happy to announce that although my feeding tube is now a few inches shorter, it is operable again. It turns out the culprits causing the problem were some nasty little raspberry seeds from the yogurt the day before. Those little rascals are tough! Neither Pepsi could dissolve them nor Joanna could dislodge them.
Having surgically removed the blockage, my tube flowed freely again. I immediately gave myself an effortless drink of twelve ounces of water and threw in a can of 300 calorie formula for good measure. The beauty of this is that now I'll be able to continue to eat by mouth--as I'm able--without the pressure of having to sustain my life in that manner. As the muscles build more endurance and coordination, I'll have to rely on the tube less and less. But for now, this has brought relief. Who says you can't have your tube and eateth, too?
I'm now an ambidextrous eater. Are you impressed? Probably not, but I'll have to say that I'm impressed by you. The outpouring of your congratulations and celebration has been very fun and encouraging. (Yes, Joanna and I still read every blog comment.) Thanks for "mourning with those who mourn" for so many months…and now, thank you for "rejoicing with those who rejoice!" You are a gift to us. It has been so good to not have to travel this road alone.

Bananas are a good choice. If I was choosing what to eat after so long of going without, bananas? Definitely at the top of the list
Bon Appetit!

You're just cracking me up! Truly! Only a man would think ahead to repairing his medical "life-line" with duct tape! I love it!
Last night at Foundations we all rejoiced at the thought of you eating chili. And now to learn of the enchiladas! Wow!
Sarah thanked God several times for your swallow returning yesterday, and then, keeping true to the way I've raised her, she said, "Oh Mommy . . . We better get Pasotr John and Joanna one of those cards so they can go to a restaurant and have a meal!" So . .. looks like you two are headed to Applebee's in the not too distant future.
We continue to pray for you both! We are proud of you both!
May you sense God's pleasure for you in new and deeper ways as you continue to live the lives He has given you . . . and to live them so abundantly!
We love you!

PS I really did manage to get the messages of the other blogs and they were great as usual.
You are funny!
It's nice to see you and real food so close together.
Too bad we couldn't see all of the "appliance technician" who is skillfully gripping those insulated diagonal pliers.
Keep up the humor!

You have given our family so much strength as we have followed your progress. You have blessed our home and our lives.
Our hearts are opened to the greater gifts that God holds for each of His children.
May He continue to shower you with His love!
AMEN AND AMEN In Jesus' name we pray.
Praise God for tools! I love that "Nephew Vince" had tools "at the ready" I shall call him "Nephew MacGyver" from now on. So now, relax, use your tube for the essentials and eat at your leisure. I hope you are aware that while you're on your trip you'd better work that swallower because you will be inundated with food upon your return. Brace yourself for impact Stumbo! I feel there will be so many "Brownies made with love" that you had better start running again to burn off the calories. Can't wait to see you again, you are missed.

Things are very much more "right" and we rejoice with you and Joanna. This smile is going to stay planted on my face for hours. In the world of "Red Light, Green Light" He has seen fit to let you take a GIANT STEP in your world of seemingly endless Baby Steps. Praise His Name!
As for swallowing, it's truly an awesome miracle! May God give you strength and joy as you begin to regain your swallowing strength. We are trusting that your feeding tube will soon be a thing of the past!
Though we've never met, we have prayed for you and will continue to do so! I love our Alliance Family!

TOTALLY GOOSEBUMPED - Can't stop smiling and thinking about His goodness!!!
I will continue to lift you up in prayer each day. Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many people all over the world!
As I look out and see the clouds, potential rain, still not a cloud can take away the sunshine and brightness of today! I have a feeling this is going to be one long and glorious celebration we all get to share with you! Thank you so much for allowing us to share and be a part of your journey! I won't be like I was as a kid or my kids were, so I won't be asking are we there yet? As you stated in a previous blog, I will just sit back and continue to trust Him to bring you along and continue to make continued progress towards your destination!
I won't be one of those wanting to be on your first real run some day (cuz that would require me to run). I might be willing to do a bike ride some day though.
Enjoy this day and you and Joanna will continue to be in my daily and hourly prayers! Won't it be great to be able to celebrate communion soon with your church family? Wow, how exciting...

Choir had a whole new demension on Wednesday! Often you will find the love we have for one another in the teasing and ribbing that takes place and you will also see people in genuine worship as we rehearse parts. The entire night was spent in heart-felt praise and worship to OUR GREAT GOD on your behalf in song and in prayer. Although we were not physically together with you and Joanna, in heart and spirit we were all there.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Grace and Bob
The prayers keep going up...as you keep the food going down. heehee

Joanna..I wish you a joy filled birthday tomorrow. see you soon!!
So appropriate!!! Love the humor! Put me in tears of laughter and tears of joy in rejoicing with you and your family! God has blessed you with a ministry that is so down-to-earth and real. You are a very talented man. I'm also a nurse, so that may explain why the "spit", "walking with a cane", etc. stories appeal to my heart with humor and hilarity...how else can we get through what life dishes out to us? Thanks for being real, honest, and so faithful to what God has called you to do and to be. I've learned many lessons through your ministry on this "blog" and sharing what God has been doing in your life. We will continue to pray and rejoice with you. Please tell your wife how amazing she is...(this BEST Nurse ever!) a "gift" to be steadily walking by your side. Blessings to you Both!
This is only one small story in what must be a multitude of stories created as people have gathered to pray for you two, your children and your extended families over the last 18 months.

Praise God for His miraculous work in your lives. Tears of joy and thankfulness filled my eyes as I read the last two posts. And laughter as I read, "having your tube and eateth too". Thank you for sharing your walk with the Lord throughout this ordeal. For the example of what it looks like to persevere through hardship and keep on trusting.
My daughter, Jenni, had a feeding tube for the first 9 months of her life and dealt with the progressive nature of learning to swallow after her recovery from tracheo-esophageal fistula and esophageal atresia. I remember the great pleasure Mike and I had when she started to eat more complicated food items (like a McDonald's hamburger). Not the best nutritionally but a food developmental step in the 80's.
It is good that the tube is functioning so there will be less stress about taking in enough each day. Progressive esophageal muscular strengthening and coordination (motility) will be my prayer for you. I echo : Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!
… Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Psalm 34:8
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Revelation 3:20
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

This awesome miracle must have brought you incredible joy and energy! And knowing you can still feed yourself both ways, you can relax and let it happen on its own timetable, right?
See you soon!
Love, Lorie
This is IT... the beginning of the very healing we have all prayed for!!! I had to call my hubby into the room to share with him... he was astounded too!
John.... it's time... God's time!
Blessings and prayers abound from Texas!!!

Did you hear the roar of celebration? At the 5:00 service we rejoiced over the picture of you and your milkshake! Barb was in tears, I had the giggles....what a joy to watch the Body of Christ celebrate God's goodness and your healing! Incredible! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Walking through the lobby about 6:45, I heard it again- A roar of celebration!
As I shared your story with Juan at home, his face lit up in celebration. He wanted to know everything you ate....so thanks so much for listing it!
Praying for continued strengthening and blessings!
Praise, honor, and gratitude to our God who reigns!

Praise God for these good news!

I just heard that a former co-worker of mine (she's still working, but I'm not) has been trying to get her husband diagnosed. He has had increasing muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing.
I would love to be able to share what doctors have been most helpful to you in diagnosing and treating your condition. I would appreciate a reply.
I have had a half dozen speech/swallow therapists...all who have been kind and helpful, but none of them had any significantly different approach or insight. I assume your friend has been to an Ear/Nose/Throat doctor--I really appreciate Dr. Skarada (spelling?) at the large ENT clinic on River Road in Salem. Your friend could contact me directly if he desired.
I am so encouraged by this news and I am thrilled by the thought of you and Joanna enjoying the taste of your favorite foods together again
Oh how we are rejoicing for you! My daughter Stephanie Bennett (who just went through baby dedication, with Sydney) called crying. She had read your last blog that you had began to swallow, as she read we both wept with great joy for you and praise for our "Healer". After so many prayers it has happened! I am glad that your feeding tube is still working and you will not have to go through getting another put in during this time of transition. I hope you have to buy a new wardrobe after a year of eating all of your favorite foods!
Again and again, we praise you Lord! We're totally grateful, but we ask for even more, until ALL that the "locust" has eaten has been restored. I'm sure Br. John will use everything you give back for the glory of Your name.
I can't begin to tell you how much joy has been placed in my heart as I read these last couple blogs. If Iam experiencing this much joy, how much more the two of you must have. I have not been able to log onto your blogs for awhile and Dawna has been gracious enough to read them and share them with me. When she called the other day to fill me in on the best one yet, she asked if I was on my knees. Then she asked if my hands were in the air. When I told her yes to both, she read (through tears of joy) your great news. We both said together, PRAISE GOD, TO HIM BE ALL THE GLORY!! I am so happy for you John. God still shows us His miracles and wonders today and I continue to have increased faith that He is not finished with you yet. Our God is an awesome God Amen? Have a wonderful day friends and please give each other a big hug for me. In His Love, Tammy S.
