I had the privilege of speaking briefly in our services last month.
Health News: God continues to answer your prayers on my behalf. Thanks for your persistence. As we close in on the one year point for this journey--it was October 18, 2008 that I felt the first symptoms--I am amazed at your ongoing support. Thanks for standing with Joanna and me for the duration. We are so blessed to have a community like you around us.
My walking continues to improve. Most days Joanna and I do about a mile and half, but have gone farther. My left leg still doesn't have full nerve or muscle function, but it's coming. I'm very encouraged by my new physical therapist. He has me doing workouts in an exercise pool with a treadmill in it. This is a new experience, but is giving me some new hope regarding what my future might be. My upper body is still very weak, but the pain isn't as constant and severe as it was for so many months. And, the general feeling of "crud" has improved as well…making my thinking more clear and increasing my daily stamina. I've still got a long, long way to go, but feel like I'm heading in the right direction.
I have blood drawn fairly often to keep my doctor posted on my progress. Most levels have improved in recent months. However, there is still sign of inflammation in my body and I remain a bit anemic, but overall I'm heading the right direction.
Still no progress with the swallow function. I hope to get a Barium Swallow Test this month. In this test, under x-ray, the therapist gives me six different drinks to try to swallow--I guess it is all barium in different viscosities. Every movement--or non-movement--of the throat is visible in this procedure. I had this done in January and would like to have it done again to see if there is anything new to learn about what is happening. Thanks for your ongoing prayers!
This Weekend
I'm back at the church working half-time. I'm encouraged that my energy level is such that this is working out okay, at least so far.
This weekend I'll join our Lead Pastor Steve Fowler on the platform to talk for a couple minutes about my new role. I won't go into all the details now, but one significant component of my new job description is prayer--providing oversight to the many expressions of prayer found at Salem Alliance and the new prayer center to be located in the Broadway building. These are interesting days of transition, but God has been very good to me.
Upcoming Blogs
I'm pushing the envelope the next few days…at least for my comfort zone. Do you remember the days when magazines published stories one chapter at a time and you had to wait for the next issue to read more of the story? I don't actually remember this myself, but I've heard about them. I've just finishing the writing of a children's story for adults. It's far too long for one blog entry so I've broken it into four chapters that I will share as four consecutive blogs October 11-14. If it drives you crazy to read this much on a computer screen or you are too impatient to wait for the next chapter, you can contact Rebecca Anderson at Salem Alliance and she'll email you the full story as an attachment. She can be reached at randerson@salemalliance.org.
Care to Join Us?
Speaking of Rebecca…she and I have been assigned the task of producing a Christmas devotional for the Salem Alliance Church family. In the past, this has been a printed booklet that we handed out or sold to those who attend our church. However, with this year's economy and the ever increasing influence of the internet, we have decided that this year we will produce an Advent devotional that will primarily be accessible on-line. (For those who don't have internet access, we will have a few printed copies available.) This will not only be cost effective but will allow many outside of Salem Alliance to enjoy this resource as well.
This is where you come in. We're extending an offer to this blog community to submit devotionals to us for consideration. Have you ever wanted to try your hand at writing? Here's your chance! Rebecca and I will be writing a few of them and we'd love to have you join us.
We're requesting from you 400-800 word devotionals on any theme of Christmas you choose. We'll take the selected entries and organize them into some manner that makes sense to us. Ideally your entry would include a key verse or passage and a central thought summarized in one sentence or two. The body of the devotional itself might include a lesson you learned, a Christmas memory you have, a story, an insight into the incredible fact that Christ came to earth, or something that would enrich the Christmas experience of others.
Entries should be sent to Rebecca at randerson@salemalliance.org by November 1.
As with any submission for publication, it is very likely that we will not be able to use everything that is sent to us. I've had this happen to me many times as I've submitted material to publishers. Even so, the act of writing itself is valuable, whether the work is published or not. So, give it a shot. Get a head start on Christmas and let your heart go there. See what you come up with. This should be fun.
Well, that's enough updating for tonight I think.
My love to all of you,
John

I always have a cup with the Lord in the morning...just what we do together...anyway, I'm just encouraged and ready for the day after reading your blog,John. It's like we're getting more and more of "you" back. I love hearing about the ministries you are working on...using you passions and gifts again...can't wait to read your book...and your progress in the pool...awesome stuff! We'll continue to pray for the rest of your body esp swallowing...Thanksgiving is coming ya know...we're asking and believing for that one!! Gotta go, I've got a date with The King...
Our love to you and Joanna,
Continue to pray every day for God's continual touch on your life and strength for Joanna too.
Love you- Darlene
I was at minto attempting to run a couple nights ago (we live .3 miles from minto...it's the best). Anyhow....I was praying for you and then had fun visions of running around a corner and seeing you running as well! Then I tackled you with a big hug and tears! It was cool. Not sure what these "visions" ever mean, but it's a definite reflection of my heart and how I (and countless others) anticipate the day when it comes true. With each step forward that you make (both literally and in terms of your health), we have joy in seeing prayers being answered. It's the best!
So much love to you and your awesome wife.....
Thank you so much!! So encouraging!!!!
PTL!!!!! love to you and Joanna,Linda A.
I am not up all that early today as these late nights of football officiating are catching up with me. Have you noticed how these kids are getting younger, bigger, and faster lately and none of those things seem to be happening for me. Well, maybe "bigger" is but not really wanting that to happen.
So good to hear of your progress and I am especially excited about hearing you are back in the office some now. Something to totally praise God for and to continue to pray for continued improvement. Will continue to pray for the swallowing and the tests that will be happening soon.
Make sure you compliment Steve Dangarin on his new really sharp looking USC jersey. It really looks good on him. Gotta love those fellow USC fans.
I will look forward to hearing you tonight at church. It will be awesome to see you again standing on the platform of SAC. Since your blog started, I have used your writings for my morning devotions. You have challenged and encouraged me in so many ways and have helped me keep my focus on Him! See you tonight!
With continued love and prayer from the Goree family.
Randall
Thanks for the update. I sense these changes in your role are most definitely "for such a time as this". I will continue to pray.
Susan G.
I'm glad your energy level is improving and that you can handle half days now. That is so good.
I'm also looking forward to your speaking to us at church.
By the way, that is a nice picture. Did Joanna take it while you were watching GB and Minn? With your right hand clenched, it looks like you're saying, "Viks!! Yes!!"

Blessings John and Joanna! Be Blessed!

I feel compassion for the lady mentioned in comment #3 who has been in bed for a few years and needing her husband to help her with everything. I don’t know her story, BUT I do know that she is extremely important and valuable to God—just as important as any pastor or Christian leader of high position. I can tell from your writing, John, that you have a humble heart and would be the first to agree with me on this.
Almost anybody who has been seriously ill knows that it is very easy to lose the will to live if there is no hope in the horizon. I am sure the poor lady in Mark 5:26 felt like dying at times. She had suffered much at the hands of many physicians only to become worse and financially broke. That’s enough to depress almost anybody! Jesus healed her, releasing her from the spirit of death that haunted her.
I have spent much time in bed due to sickness. This changed when I started to feel HOPE coming from God’s word. I sure wasn’t getting much hope from doctors, but Psalm 103:3 says of the LORD, “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”
People who minister to the sick today are afraid of giving false hope. I understand that giving false hope is a bad thing. However, false despair is just as bad, maybe worse. I realize that it’s hard to have faith for healing when nothing seems to happen after prayer. However, there are numerous testimonies of people who have been healed of medically incurable diseases after dealing with spiritual issues such as rejection, fear, bitterness, and etc. See 2 Corinthians 7:1 and beinhealth.com.
God bless the precious lady mentioned in comment #3. May she fulfill ALL that God has planned for her life!!
Love, Joy
Glad to hear you're in the pool. I joined the Kroc Center and have been doing power walking at 6 - 7 am. Great class. It's a little river with a current so it shoves you along. My kind of workout! I love water the best. It does help those sore muscles and the stamina is great for stress.
The new job is great! Such a blessing to work with good people and the challenge of learning new things.
Sorry to have missed you this weekend. I can't think of a better person to handle the prayer ministry. I think it will be right up your alley. Have a good week! Hugs to both of you, Sandy
Thanks for the update. I'm so encouraged to hear of all of the progress and will be praying for your swallow test - that it is productive, conclusive, and shows positive movement towards a healthy and strong swallow.
You never cease to be in my prayers, thoughts ...and lots of dreams (????).
But I love you both so so so much and just needed to tell you that tonight.
Love,
Kate
Thank you both; you & Rebecca. That was a rewarding exercise and I appreciate the new insight realized from same.
God Bless you both for all you do.
